au detour d'une discussion

In a footnote, an author writes:

"James en fait la remarque comme par inadvertance au détour d'une discussion plus générale"

Does this mean:

as a detour from a more general discussion
as an aside to a more general discussion

?

thanks!

In my dictionary I find "au détour de la conversation" = "in the course of the conversation." I think I'd go with "in the course of" myself.

so "detour" is a false friend in this case? i really thought "an aside" would be the perfect translation!

    thanks so very much!
