Hi, could any tell what does the phrasal verb, "sign out", mean in this context:

"
"PROCEDURES
28.3.1 The following individuals will have access to key boxes within the department
28.3.1.1 All personnel of Officer grade are authorized to sign out keys from the
Officers office"

Thank you

You need official permission to gain access to the key to a box. The keys have to be signed out to you by someone of Officer grade, and then signed back in when you return them. You only have access to keys through a duly authorised Officer.
