Hello everyone,

I'm having trouble finding the appropriate term in English for "avvelenamenti voluttuari" The context is a medical text and the original sentence is quite a long list which I've condensed a bit for this thread:

Le cause possono essere a volte note - e disparate - come [.....], inquinamento aereo (cancro polmonare nei fumatori), avvelenamenti voluttuari (cancro al fegato degli etilisti), [.....].

My attempt:

The causes can be known – and varied – like [.....], air pollution (lung cancer in smokers), substance abuse, (liver cancer in alcoholics), [.....].

All I've been able to come up with is "substance abuse", but I'd appreciate any input...

Thanks in advance!

  • Hi Rocamadour,

Thank you for the suggestion! I checked out the term "voluntary intoxication" and though there are many hits for it on G--gle, it is mainly in a legal sense. I'm hoping to find a term that is more acceptable in a medical context...

    Hi Words :)

I actually think "substance abuse" is fine. I think we have to avoid anything along the lines of "voluntary", don't we? :) However, maybe you could change the first bit. Something like

The causes can be [well] known and diverse, such as.....

    Hi elfa,

Thank you for confirming my instinct!

I think we have to avoid anything along the lines of "voluntary", don't we? :tick: (This was indeed what I wanted to avoid...)

The causes can be [well] known and diverse, such as.....:tick: Much better than my original, thank you!
