Awning, Torn Strips

Hello. I need some help to understand the following paragraph

torn strips of faded awning flapped mournfully against the terrace windows.

I just can't the understand of the bolded words!
I know the meaning of torn (tear, torn) and strip (like slim,a line of sunshine maybe?), and I know what an awning is (like this)

Awnings are often made of cloth (canvas) and when they get old, they fade and the wind tears them into strips (of cloth/canvas) that flap in the wind.
