Hi,

Can somebody please confirm if I can use the phrase "balance out" in cooking context? (To mean, you make sure that it's not too salty nor too sweet)

    Hi zhonglin,
Yes, you can; for example: "caramelized onions or mushrooms can balance out the acidity of a tomato-based sauce." However, can you provide more specific context?

Thanks! For example, my mother talks to me as she helps me cook and she doesn't want the food to turn out very salty, so can she tell me "you should learn to balance it out"?

Yes, that works for me - also, balance out the flavors, balance out the saltiness, balance out the spices, etc. :)
