Be off to a quicker start

    Bonjour, je voudrais savoir la signification de "off" dans "they were off to a quicker start". Je sais que cette phrase veut dire, "ils ont été plus rapides" mais je ne comprend pas l'utilisation de "off". Merci d'avance :)

    they were off to a quicker start = ils ont eu un démarrage plus rapide

    "be off" en général veut dire "partir", "s'en aller"
    "I'm off" = je m'en vais
    Au début d'une course (de chevaux) "they're off" = c'est parti.
    "be off!" (tout seul) = fous le camp !

    "To be off to a [good, slow, early, etc] start" is something of a set expression. It just means that they started [well, early, slowly, etc.] :)
