How would you describe this picture? which is best?

1. Marathon runners are strung out along the beach path.
2. Marathon runners spread along the beach path.
3. Marathon runners extend along the beach path.

    Of those three, only “are strung out” works for me. That’s because the active verb forms in the other versions imply that the runners are intentionally extending/spreading along the path, rather than naturally falling into that formation. In the form of a caption, other options (of which there are many) include:

    Marathon runners spread out along the beach path
    (in which “spread” is the past participle used adjectivally)
    Marathon runners dotted all along the beach path
