bears witness

(The fact that Bergman bowed to criticism and never made the childish and sentimental religious morality tale he originally imagined bears witness to his insecurity about both his faith and doubt.)
I can't get the exact meaning of bears witness here.
Does it mean ( He never made the original idea he'd got because he thought it could show the others his uncertainty about faith and doubt)?
Please,help me guys.

you could replace "bears witness to his insecurity " with "shows his insecurity ..."
