Hi

Could anybody explain me the meaning of this sentence???:

They follow the Texas trail, beaten into the ground by 600,000 head of cattle taken off the range only that year

Thanks

"Beaten into the ground" here means cut into the earth over the course of the year by the hooves of the hundreds of thousands of cattle that have walked along that path.
