Today, in a wedding, the groom said this to the bride:

I met you is beautiful surprise.

I wonder if my translation of the bold is natural.

I want to say that "it's surprise to meet you but this is beautiful, not a bad surprise."

Yes, it must be in the past tense, unless this is some sort of forced ceremony and they were strangers until they met at their wedding.

In case you didn't deduce it from the answers above: the sentence is ungrammatical; I met you cannot be a subject.
