...by want of confidence in the goodness of God, we give up hope of obtaining what we ask for in prayer, because it is deferred.

I don't understand the last part of the sentence. The extract comes from a religion book.

    My guess would be it means that we defer to God, "parce que nous nous en remettons à lui" or "parce que nous mettons notre destin entre ses mains" ?
