beet joke

Hi everybody.

I didn't understand this blurb included in a DC comic book from the 60s.

Why is a carrot like a DC magazine? Because neither one can be beet!

Why is this funny? Are they playing with beet/beat/beaten (No other magazine can beat a DC magazine)?

Yes. Beet is a vegetable different from carrot. The past participle of 'beat' is standardly 'beaten' but is often 'beat'.
