I'd like to ask you about the following sentence:

Ben is hoping that he is promoted / he will be promoted soon.

Are both options in italics appropriate? The key of the test in which I found it (English in Mind 3, CUP 2010) provides only the second option, but I remember that 'hope' can be followed by Future Simple or Present Simple. Do both passive forms work here then?
