Hi everyone,

In Middle Bangla বলানো (balaano) can be used both as a transitive verb with causative meaning ('to make speak', 'to make tell') and as a reflexive ('to be called'). I was wondering if it can still be used as a reflexive in modern Bangla. Haven't found any examples yet so I hope for some input from native speakers. Thank you!

  • Actually what do you want to say? Can you write the context?
I want to ask if বলানো can mean 'to be called (someone/something)' in modern Bengali.

    Some examples from Middle Bangla:

    কলিযুগে নতুবা বলাব কর্ণদাতা
    "In the dark age I will once again be called as generous as Karna" (Rupram's Dharmamangal);

    আপনার নাম তুমি না বলাবে রতি
"Don't let yourself be called by the name Rati" (Mukundaram's Chandimangal; cited from Sen's Old and Middle Bengali dictionary).

    আমি বাংলাতে কথা বলি- I speak bangla.
    সে বাংলায় কথা বলে- He speaks bangla.
    সে বাংলা বলে-He speaks bangla.

#If a person is dumb and cant speak after brain stroke or some other incidents.
    তাকে দিয়ে কথা বলাতে হবে- we have to make him speak.

I know that this verb can be used with the meaning 'to make (someone) speak'. I was asking if it could be used with the meaning 'to be called (someone or something)' in Modern Bangla, cause in Middle Bangla it can be used with both meanings.

    কলিযুগে আমাকে আবার কর্ণদাতা বলে বা হিসাবে ডাকা হবে।
"Don't let yourself be called by the name Rati"
    তোমাকে তুমি রতি নামে ডাকতে দিয়ো/বলো না।
That's to say, tell everyone to call you by another name.

I know what these phrases mean, thanks. I'm asking if বলানো can be used in this way in Modern Bangla. These examples are from Middle Bangla; it seems that this kind of usage was normal back then, but I can't find any examples with বলানো used as a reflexive in modern texts.

No, it can not be used with the meaning 'to be called'
My name is Abrahum lincon.. But i dont want to be called by the name linkon. I want to be called by the name Abrahum.

    That means,
    আমাকে কেউ লিংকন নামে ডাকুক/ডাকবে/বলুক তা আমি চাইনা।
    আমি চাই আব্রাহাম নামে ডাকুক/ ডাক দিক/ বলুক।

    তাকে দিয়ে যেভাবে হোক কথাটা বলানো দরকার।
-we have to make him tell about that matter at any cost.
