How important is it to know a Berber language in the magrib? Was the Arabization of this region recent or has Arabic been spoken there for a while?
In some rural areas Berber is widely spoken (more than Arabic) but for political reasons is somehow forbidden or not encouraged. Some berbers reject to talk in Arabic and prefer the use of French. On the other hand, Arabic dialects in the Maghreb have a strong influence of both French and Berber in the vocabulary.
