better off as nothing

Hello, everyone!
In a Batman comics, Batman is talking about his past and says of himself that he "is pain". He wonders what use is being just pain.
...and if it’s not dignified and it’s not kind, then maybe it’s not worth anything. Maybe it’s better off as nothing. Gone. Dead.
I am quite confused by the red part. Is he saying that it is better to be nothing than to be a pain? Could you rephrase it for me please?

It seems as if he is saying: "Maybe it’s better off being nothing, being gone, being dead." (being nothing -> having no existence.)
