The many breaks and stops and the many people who gave me a home between stretches of cycling made up for the lack of a permanent home and provided comfort.

Strech is a word with many various meanings so I find it hard to grasp its specific meaning in different contexts. Here, I think it refers to periods, legs, or stages of cycling, right?

    Thanks.

    You're right!
As a side note, "stages" usually implies its a race, and from the context I don't think it is.

    Thanks, vachecow.
Except stages, legs and periods of cycling work here, right?

Yes, they work well with the context.

To me, "periods" sounds better than "legs."

I haven't heard it used like that specifically, but I've heard it used in reference to journeys.

I hear it more with "journeys"

On the first leg of their journey, the Smiths will visit ....

    Regards.

    Thanks, my friends.
So, periods or stretches of cycling work better, while legs of journeys are common collocations.
