Isn't closed /e/ the standard for unstressed e in Italian?
I wouldn't say it is closed, nor open, to be honest. Normally, unstressed e and o vowels are pronounced like in Spanish or Greek (true-mid) . I'm obviously referring to Standard Italian, there may be regional variations, though.
Personally, I pronounce 'Bajdn, it's not a real claused e as I said in my previous post. :)
