Big Brother

< Previous | Next >
Hello everyone,

I already know that "big brother" refers to "elder brother" or to "a spy" or "spy system" at the time of the cold war. The question is: Why did they call this "spy"/ "spy system" "big brother"? Is it because the "elder brother" controls/spies on the younger ones?

Thank you very much in advance!

The term comes from the novel 1984 by George Orwell. There, Big Brother is leader of the Party, and there are lots of posters that say Big Brother is watching you. See Wikipedia.
