billion diverse lives

Please confirm if "the billion diverse" in the following context, taken from "The Camera Eye 45" in "The Big Money" by Dos Passos, is referring to "lives" at the end of the passage:
(the salty in all of us ocean the protoplasm throbbing through cells growing dividing sprouting into the billion diverse not yet labeled not yet named
always they slip through the fingers
the changeable the multitudinous lives)
In other word, can we read it like this: "... growing, dividing, sprouting into the billion diverse lives, not yet labeled, not yet named..."?
