could you please help me with the the following sentence?

The tiny purplish flowers of the ground-hugging birdbrush on the gentle hills were giving way to the little black berries

I piccoli fiori violacei ..... sulle dolci colline lasciavano spazio ai piccoli frutti di bosco.

The birdbrush might be a kind of flower, but I've got non idea...

Possibly it should refer to some species of Callistemon (it seems that some are also ground-hugging).

and what does ground-hugging means exactly?

L'ho visto per la prima volta in Sardegna che è una meravigliosa isola ricoperta di mirto, corbezzolo e 1000 altre piante arbustive (ground-hugging)... Anche se le sugherelle... Sigh...
