    And what do you call the fan? I'm not referring to the complete item you'd buy in a shop (which is also called a fan). I'm referring to the collective name for the set of blades.

    Quiero decir: As the fan was spinning, it made a high-pitched noise.
    Mientras que el propulsor [?] hacía girar, hacía un ruido agudo. [?]

    "Hélice" is the whole set of blades.
    "Ventilador" is the device

    En esa frase podrías decir "ventilador" también sin problema. No se va a entender como que el aparato en su totalidad estuviera girando. :)
