Bloc design

Merci d'avance pour votre précieuse aide. Je suis en train de traduire un texte d'anglais en français et je suis tombé sur cette phrase coriace, difficile à comprendre déjà en anglais. Auriez-vous une idée de ce que cela veut dire? Voici mon essai:

The actual application of the "mother-child participatory research and extension concept" was illustrated and basically involved the setting up of a primary randomised complete researcher-designed and managed block design of trials surrounded by smaller sites around it in farmers' fields.

L'application réelle de "la recherche participative mère-enfant et le concept de vulgarisation" a été illustrée et a fondamentalement impliqué la création d'un échantillonnage aléatoire stratifié d'essais conçu et géré par le chercheur et entouré par des petits sites dans le champs des agriculteurs

This is a very clumsily-phrased sentence!

My first guess is that the opposition is between (1) block design and (2) smaller sites around it. So it would be essais appliqués sur un bloc géographique, entouré par...

But wait for other views; I'm far from sure!

Thanks Mr Bradford for your quick response. I do agree, the sentence is totally awkward. I just hope that onde day, people who write reports of this nature will pay more attention to the way they phrase their sentences especially if they know that the reports will be translated. Thanks once again and I hope some people will add to your proposition.
