block: The store is two blocks away. [acceptable?]

Is a "block" roughly the distance between two streets? So, if I wanted to tell someone that a store is located two traffic lights away, I could say, "the store is two blocks away." Right?

Assuming there was a traffic light at every intersection, yes, you could say that. And a block is exactly the distance between two cross-streets -- and the distance will vary in various locations.
