Bob had been killed <during, while> fighting with his regiment

  1. Bob had been killed while fighting with his regiment

    1. Is this sentence correct? If it is rewritten as :

Bob was killed while fighting with his regiment.

    2. Is it correct logically?
    3. Why it is wrong if while is replaced by during?

    Many thanks in advance.
