Hi everyone:

I was reading this article from The New York Times: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/08/15/nyregion/rainbow-room-shut-by-feud-has-fading-wish.html?_r=1&hp
and I found the expressions "boldface encounter" and "boldface name" to be quite puzzling.

1. "For a restaurant that figured in so many first nights, so many first dates, so many boldface encounters, it is impossible to know how many bottles of Champagne were not drunk, how many dances were not danced, how many anniversaries were not celebrated, how many famous elbows were not rubbed."

2. The Rainbow Room's elegant décor and stunning 65th-floor views made it a gathering place for boldface names like Noël Coward and Estée Lauder."

Thanks in advance.
