    Bonjour,
« The gauffered decoration of the edges appears to be quite consistent across the SNML and the other editions bound with it, and analysis of the gold shows no difference between the gold and the bole on the SNML and the rest of the bookblock »
    (le SNML est un livre)
    Merci

"A fine, smooth, reddish clay containing iron oxide, used especially as a ground for oil painting and gilding." definition 2 in Oxford online dictionary

Ce serait donc bien de "l'argile"? ça m'étonnait dans ce contexte...

Also "bole" = "poliment" The Goldleaf Factory, but not necessarily red. Keywords "red gilding clay bole poliment" find a commercial site (so no link here)with, near the bottom of the page, a French summary: "Le Bolus pour l'usage de l'or Poliment." (also green gilding clay...). Neither bolus nor poliment known by CNRTL.

isn't "used especially as a ground for oil painting and gilding." relevant to this context?

I don't think the "fine..clay" part of the definition means the book is smeared in ordinary clay. "Fine" in this context means finely-ground, much like the stuff most paints are made from. See also Uncle Bob's reference to "gilding clay".
