Bone knitting / knitting bones

When somebody breaks his/her leg and has to wear a walking cast, I've read the bones can be said to be "knitting" underneath the cast, and that it is quite unpleasant.
I guess the idea is that the bones are reconstituting themselves, thus causing pain to the injured person.
I can't think of an equivalent in French, though...

"Les os travaillent"?

"Knitting" simply means "healing"; the natural process of infiltrating bone-forming cells into the region of the break and reuniting and remodeling the ends. It does not in itself imply pain. My Larousse says "se souder".
