book it

Dear all
The following two parapraphs are from a fiction novel called PARANORMALCY.
Eath of them has "book it" in it but with different meanings.
I am not sure what they mean exactly. Could someone please tell me?

"I reached into my bag and handed him a bunch of euros. Getting from Italy to Romania wouldn't be easy, and he needed to book it."

"A hariy little gremlin, mouth open and acidic saliva dripping from sharp teeth, was booking it on all fours toward us."
