Hello!

I'm wondering how that part of an easel where the painting sits is called. I've got nothing concrete from my internet searches save for 'bottom shelf' which I think is confusing and may led people to believe the easel has an actual shelf below where you can store your art supplies.

I myself thought of border or frame, but I do realize this one doesn't go all the way around. It's just a portion of wood.

The sentence would go like this: "Mary put the brush down on the bottom shelf of the portable easel and sighed, tired.".

Any suggestions are welcome.:)

Ah, of course, ledge! There's a song I know that mentions it to refer to the top of a building, like a person balancing themselves there and thinking to jump off it. Anyway, it makes sense. Thank you both!
