Break down

I've checked the various meanings and uses of the phrasal verb " to break down", however I'm not sure at all which of these two sentences is correct " Sorry I didn't make your favourite pie. My oven broke." or " Sorry I didn't make your favourite pie. My oven broke down."
Personally, I don't like either. I would prefer " Sorry I didn't make your favourite pie. My oven wasn't working"
Is there a rule that I don't know?
Thanks
