breaks the tackle

Hello everyone,

In american fottball, when an attacking player runs with the ball to score a touchdown, commentators often say that he breaks the tackle.
Does "breaks the tackle" mean that an attacking player knocks a defending player down?

Thank you.

"Evasive move" sounds like a move that would avoid the contact in the first place. If you break a tackle, you've been tackled, but by strength or skill you manage to get out of it. You break the defender's hold on you.
