Hi,

I came across this sentence online:
"Brimstone is a component part of explosive."

I wonder if this sentence is correct, because I'd say:
"Brimstone is a component of explosive."

What do you think? Thanks a lot.

    I agree.The word 'part' is extraneous.

    Hi Caireo. Yes, I'd just call it a component (or ingredient ... ?*) too. I'd reserve 'component part' for more solid things: cars, machinery, etc.

    *I'm not an expert on explosives so am not sure what the jargon would say.
