Does "Britain’s conquest of New France" mean "Britain took the control of France" or simply "Britain defeated France in a war"?

Britain’s conquest of New France in 1759–1760, during the Seven Years War (1756–1763), inspired works about two of its victorious generals – Amherst and Wolfe – that reveal a great deal about eighteenth-century war art and about Britain as it stood on the verge of empire (Art and War by Laura Brandon).
