bubbling beneath the surface

I was reading a magazine and I was trying to understand this quote.
"Mothers and Daughters have intrinsically complicated relationship with insecurity, resentment, and competition bubbling beneath the surface."
Anyone know what they mean by bubbling beneath the surface??

    Welcome, niweli.

These problems, insecurity, resentment, and competition, are present; they are just not apparent because they are hidden beneath the surface. But they are serious problems, hence the "bubbling," which metaphorically suggests something that is boiling or fermenting or active.
