Hi.

Here is a sentence: "Stress also plays an important role in the acceleration of HIV infection and the development of AIDS, in part by attacking CD4+ T lymphocytes. Three RCTs show that mindfulness interventions can buffer declines in or increase CD4+ T lymphocytes counts in stressed HIV-positive adults at posttreatment and at follow-up time points up to 9 months later."

RCT: Randomized Controlled Trial

I think those two "in" have the same meaning which refers to "in stressed HIV-positive adults", am I right?
If I am, why not write in this way"...show that mindfulness interventions can buffer declines or increase CD4+ T lymphocyte counts in stressed HIV-positive adults..."

thanks a lot.

Not exactly. The first "in" refers to declines in CD4+ T lymphocytes. The second has the meaning you wrote: it can have either of those effects in stressed HIV-positive adults.
