From TV series<Casual>,

Alex, Laura, Valerie, they're at their parents' wedding. They don't have a good relationship with their parents.

Here's the conversation.
Alex - It's all awful.
Laura - We could've stayed home.
Alex - I wanted to see if they'd burst into flames.
Laura - Another prayer unanswered.

I want to know if "burst into flames" here means literally or figuratively. If it's figurative, what does it mean?
Thank you.

A vampire (or other evil mythological creature) might literally burst into flames upon entering a church, being blessed by a holy man, or being sprinkled with holy water (all things that could happen at a wedding). Alex is (jokingly) suggesting that this idea might apply to their parents.
