...but a short time...but a small part...

The author appears to love to use "but" a lot. I am very curious about what is the nuance if it were written as "WE EACH EXIST FOR ONLY A SHORT TIME, and in that time explore only a small part of the whole universe"?

"But" sounds a bit more crisp and powerful to me. But I am not very familar with most advanced English.

WE EACH EXIST FOR BUT A SHORT TIME, and in that time explore but a small part of the whole universe. But humans are a curious species. We wonder, we seek answers.
