In the short story "The Adventure of the Stock-broker's clerk" from The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, Mr. Hall Pycroft says "but if I have lost my crib and get nothing in exchange I shall feel what a soft Johnny I have been."

What does this sentence mean? What does crib mean in the above sentence?
