but that he gave himself ample time

If he stood at the center of the parting of the ways, closed his eyes, turned thrice about, and called, “ O-o-o Phoebe ! twice, and then threw his cane straight before him, that would surely indicate which way to go for Phoebe, or one of these mystic powers would govern its direction and fall ! In whichever direction it went, even though, as was not infrequently the case, it took him back along the path he had already come, he was not so far gone in his mind but that he gave himself ample time to search before call-ing again, but that he had the strange feeling that sometime he would find her .

He wasn't so crazy /so far gone/ that he didn't give himself lots of time /ample time/ to search /for Phoebe/
before calling out her name again. He still felt he would find her.

/that he didn't give himself lots of time/ or /that he did give himself lots of time/
So your saying, when he was not very crazy( he was in a better condition) he devote a lot of time to search for Phoebe, befor calling out her name again?

He did give the time to search for Phoebe.
He wasn't so crazy that he wouldn't do it.
Because he wasn't so crazy, he did search.

I really don't understand what the author is trying to say here. Why you are saying " because he wasn't so crazy, he did search?" We know that he is out of his mind and his wife is dead. Every body knows that and he just keep searching for something impossible.
