Hi guys

Q. What are we here for __________ the matter?

a. but to discuss b. unless discussing

The answer is 'a' according to the book. I understand but I am wondering why b is not correct.

What are we here for unless (we are) discussing the matter?
or from 'What are we here for unless we discuss the matter?'
to' What are we here for unless discussing the matter?

Isn't that correct? What do you think guys?

Thanks

    Your book is correct.

You could however say: What are we here for unless it's to discuss the matter?
Or: Why are we here unless it's to discuss...?
