Hello

Such insights were in the intellectual air by the mid-1960s. But Dr. Dawkins grasped the power of metaphor — that selfish gene — and so made the idea come alive.
Not everyone bought the argument. The moral implications proved deeply troubling, suggesting that altruism disguised selfish, gene-driven behavior.

What does "bought the argument" mean?
Does it mean "evaluated the argument"?

Thank you

bought the argument = agreed with his reasoning.

Many people "evaluated the argument", many agreed, some did not.
