Nestlé ruled itself out of the running by (after) buying Kraft’s American Pizza business for $3.7 billion early this month.
Could I leave out "after" here?

    Thank you, I found it. I believe they've simply made a mistake. Your version without "after" sounds right to me. The reason I asked the question is because I can see either "by" or "after" but not both. So I can see the reporter writing one and deciding to change and not deleting the other... or something similar. :)
