I am wondering about this scenario.

When you talk to him, you also need to look at him. By looking at him you are showing him/will be showing him that you are listening.


Would it be wrong to use “you show” him?

    No. You are describing something that always happens - a universal truth/invariable action/result/purpose, etc.

    If/whenever you do that, you open the door.
    By doing that, you open the door.
