I know the girl by sight, but I have never had a chance to talk to her.

I only know the meaning "by sight" vaguely. When I closely examine it, I find it hard to interpret it--does "by sight" mean I ony see her once, a few times, or many times? What do you think? Thanks.

It means that you recognize her as someone you've seen before, probably a few times, at least. People who travel regularly on the same train often know each other by sight, without ever having spoken.
