Hello .

In "She sought to answer such arguments by the familiar if oblique method of finding the gipsy life itself rude and barbarous;" V. Woolf 'Orlando'
"Elle chercha à répondre à de tels arguments par la familière sinon oblique(biaisée,détournée?) méthode de trouver leur vie rude et barbare."
Is there 'if' equal to 'sinon'?

    Hello yael,

    I would propose the following translations
    oblique->indirect
    if->mais
    familier->commun

    Regards

    I think not.

    . . . if oblique suggests that the method would always be seen as oblique.

    . . . if not oblique suggests that it might only be seen as oblique by some people.

    Why not use something like

    . . . .par la méthode familière quoique oblique de trouver . . .
