by the way/judging by the way > they look

Hello everyone! I would like to know which of the following sentences, if any, is correct:

1) I've never seen a snake face to face, but, by the way they look in films, they're pretty scary.

2) I've never seen a snake face to face, but, judging by the way they look in films, they're pretty scary.

I tend to think "judging" (or another verb with the same function) is really needed here.
