caleçon de bain/maillot de bain

Is there a specific difference between a maillot de bain and a caleçon de bain? The dictionary refers to both as swimming trunks but I was wondering if there was a specific difference between the two...?

Many thanks for any assistance.

We can make a difference :
Caleçon de bain is something "long" as surfers wear and it's prohibited in french swimming-pools, because it can be worn outside the pool in summer (and so it can be contaminated).
Maillot de bain is more dedicated to swimming-pool. It can't be worn outside (as a underwear).
