Hello. I would like to know if it's correct to say the following sentence:

"I called him that I would be late."

...or do I need to say something like "I called him and told him I would be late."?

Thank you in advance for your help.

That doesn't work in BE, no.

"I called him to say I would be late" is perhaps the neatest way of doing it. :)

Thank you for your answer, your sentence sounds much better.

I am just wondering, if you heard a native English speaker say that sentence I wrote, would that strike you as very odd or can you imagine someone saying it in a very informal talk?

It sounds to me like the sort of construction that would be used in American English, but I have no firm evidence to support that impression.

Perhaps we can get an AE speaker to give us an opinion...:)
