A man of the British Security Services explains : Snapdragon was an IRA code word. IT WAS CALLED IN forty minutes before the Cookstown bomb in 1984. The caller also gave the registration of the vehicle in which the bomb was planted. The toll that day was 5 civilians and two MI5 officers.

What does "it was called in" mean here ? What does "it" refer to ?

It refers to the fact that the IRA generally telephoned someone (newpaper or radio station) to warn of their bombs. In order to separate the genuine calls from the hoaxes (yes, there were those as well), the IRA used a secret code, like Snapdragon.
